Beware of Fraudulent Emails Claiming to be the IRS

Many Americans have already heard that they should be wary of potentially fraudulent emails claiming to be from the IRS. However, such phishing scams can be sophisticated and difficult to spot. Here’s one scheme you can easily identify and reject. The IRS is warning about emails that purport to come from the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel (TAP) and claim you’re owed a refund. TAP is a volunteer board that works to address taxpayer issues and concerns, but it never has access to taxpayers’ personal or financial information, including their tax returns. So if you receive an email from TAP promising a refund, immediately report it to phishing@irs.gov and then delete the message. Contact us with questions. © 2023
