The Deadline to File a 2020 Federal Income Tax Return

If you didn’t file a 2020 federal income tax return and you expect a refund, time is running out: The deadline for filing and claiming a refund for the 2020 tax year is May 17, 2024. The IRS estimates that $10 billion in 2020 refunds currently remains unclaimed. Keep in mind, however, that even if you file your 2020 tax return by the May 17 deadline, the IRS may withhold your refund if you haven’t already filed returns for the 2021 and 2022 tax years. Your refund could be applied to amounts you owe to the federal or a state government or used to offset unpaid child support. Taxpayers typically have three years to file and claim a refund, but extra time was provided for 2020 due to COVID-19. Contact us for assistance. © 2024
