The New Jersey Division of Taxation (DOT) has updated its publication on the filing status that taxpayers should use when filing gross income tax returns. The DOT explains that taxpayers must use the same filing status they used for federal income tax purposes, except for taxpayers who are in a civil union. Partners in a civil union are considered married for New Jersey income tax purposes and generally can’t file tax returns as single persons even if they filed as single persons for federal income tax purposes. © 2019
