“Stay alert and safeguard” your Economic Impact Payment (EIP), urges the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). EIPs are made to eligible taxpayers to help mitigate the financial effects of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. As EIPs are delivered, TIGTA reminds “all taxpayers to exercise caution to avoid becoming victimized by thieves and scammers” looking to take them. Warnings from TIGTA include: avoid websites or services that claim they can process an EIP, or serve as an intermediary between the IRS and taxpayers; don’t share personal information with anyone offering assistance with an EIP.
