Beware Scams After a Disaster

Fraudsters are opportunists, and disasters present many opportunities to steal assets and information. These fraudsters target victims when they’re vulnerable, offering bogus help. They may also steal from generous people seeking to aid victims. The IRS warns that these scams usually start with unsolicited contact by phone, on social media, by e-mail, in person, or using bogus websites. Thieves may say they work for the IRS and can help victims get tax relief. Or they may claim to represent charities offering aid or collecting donations for victims. If you’re a disaster victim or a would-be donor, read these tips from the IRS to help you avoid being defrauded by scammers. Contact Cg with questions. © 2021
