E-mail Scam Alert for University Students & Staff

Scam alert with woman using a laptop on a coffee table

The IRS has a new warning for university students and staff, as well as anyone with “.edu” in their email addresses. Email addresses associated with education institutions are the primary target of an IRS-impersonation scam. This includes public, private and nonprofit schools. The suspect emails display the IRS logo and may use subject lines that refer to a “tax refund.” They direct recipients to click a link to claim their refunds. The link then asks for personal information such as a Social Security number, birthdate and more. The IRS never initiates contact by email or phone. If you receive a suspicious message, here are the details to report it. For questions, contact us. © 2021
